This 50-lot private oceanfront residential community is located along the Kohala Coast in Kamuela, Hawaii. The gated development offers a public trail with spectacular ocean and coastline views and is minutes from restaurants, white-sand beaches, shopping, world-class golfing, and premier resorts.
Challenge:
Maps for the community’s public access trail didn’t accurately match the trail’s actual route following rezoning by the County of Hawaii. The misalignment created safety concerns, and the County ordered a Public Access Plan be submitted to the Planning Department so changes could be made.
Resolution:
The community manager and the Associa Hawaii team facilitated site visits with the appropriate authorities and meetings with the local trail committee. These meetings brought homeowners, government leaders, and community groups together to address concerns about the trail and put the proper Public Access Plan in place. The management team also recommended a consultant to write the plan and a professional surveyor to survey the public access trail and analyze re-alignment. With the branch’s connections and help from these experts, a Public Access Plan was submitted to the County of Hawaii, the community avoided legal issues, and improvements were made to the public access trail.
